News Corp., the parent company of Fox News, was hoping to open a propaganda branch in Canada — called “Sun News TV” (or “Fox North”). It was hoping its crony in Ottawa, winger Prime Minister Stephen Harper, would be successful in overturning a law prohibiting lying on broadcast news. (Imagine that. There is a law in Canada prohibiting lying during newscasts. How civilized.) But, thank goodness there is still some sanity in the world; they were wrong:

Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada’s right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.
Canada’s Radio Act requires that “a licenser may not broadcast … any false or misleading news.” The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the “Fairness Doctrine” in 1987.
Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper’s proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, “Sun TV News” which Canadians call “Fox News North.”
Something like this would never happen in the US because the people in Washington work for the corporations, not for the good of the country but, again, it’s nice to know sanity still exists somewhere in the world.
Congratulations Canada!
Now we wait to see if “Sun News TV” agrees not to lie, something I think it’s incapable of. Telling the truth isn’t part of its consciousness or its business model.

There are other new organizations in the US, like CNN, MSNBC and co. who would also be subject to that law. You can’t even imagine the law suits *they’d* generate.
As to Canada, the CBC has lied so much one can only imagine that part of the law is a dead-letter anyway.

The law which prohibits false or misleading news was struck down by our Supreme Court in 1992, but not officially repealed. It has remained on the books but has been effectively unenforceable. A committee has been haggling for 20 years now over new wording which would not be struck down by the courts as an infringement of free speech. When the new wording was finally to be introduced in Parliament the bill was deliberately misrepresented by most Canadian news outlets as an attempt to allow rather than re-prohibit the dissemination of false and misleading news. What you are repeating is a malicious and deliberate lie told by most Canadian media outlets.
Quebecor’s Sun News (which is a national chain of newspapers) just happened to apply for a permit to start a TV news channel at the same time. Quebecor has absolutely nothing to do with News Corp or with Fox News. The owner is a left-wing Quebecois separatist. Once again, this is a deliberate lie told by the established TV News companies (CBC, Bell Globemedia and Canwest Global) to prevent a new competitor from eating into their ratings and ad revenue.
The government was not expecting the committee’s new wording. It was presented to them by a committee as a minor technical change demanded by the Supreme Court and long overdue. Administrivia. At the first sign of trouble, the Conservatives withdrew it. The bill was never part of their agenda. Once again, a deliberate falsehood.
I’m happy to say that Sun News is doing quite well. I’m also happy to say that I have yet to catch Sun News in a deliberate lie, although they have sometimes repeated falsehoods which they have heard elsewhere but failed to check. CTV, Global and the CBC are habitually dishonest. They lie frequently, and now they will continue to get away with it.

There were no significant impediments to the application, despite a lot of hard work of their competitors smear them. That would be because of an annoying thing called “the rule of law”. You can’t treat someone according to what you think they are going to do only by what they have done. Since it is impossible for a non-existant news channel to have said anything true or false, it is impossible to deny their application based on any false things they’ve said. Once they’ve actually said false things, then you can either revoke or refuse to renew their license.
